Youn Yuh-jung ‘Grandma’ Minari is predicted to win an Oscar in 2021

Youn Yuh-jung, who plays the grandmother in Minari, is predicted to bring home the Best Supporting Actress trophy at the 2021 Oscars.
Based on the poll, Youn Yuh-jung received 4,583 votes from experts, editors, and netizens. This voice puts her far above the four actresses who have competed for the trophy.

Meanwhile, Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent) was in second place with 582 votes, followed by Glenn Close (Hillbilly Elegy), Olivia Colman (The Father), and Amanda Seyfried (Mank).
Youn Yuh-jung also received 24 out of 27 expert filmmakers ‘votes and got all the editors’ votes from the Top 24 page, which previously correctly predicted the previous Oscar winner.

“The chances of Youn Yuh-jung being selected as the winner look good at the moment,” wrote Gold Derby as reported by Yonhap.

Previously, Youn Yuh-jung had taken home the Best Supporting Actress trophy from a series of international awards such as the Screen Actors Guild or SAG Awards 2021 and BAFTA 2021.

This achievement made her break the record of becoming a South Korean actress who won the trophy.

Meanwhile, Minari was nominated for six Oscar 2021, starting from Best Picture, Best Director (Lee Isaac Chung), Best Actor (Steven Yeun), Best Supporting Actress (Youn Yuh-jung), Best Original Screenplay (Lee Isaac Chung), and Best Original Score (Emile Mosseri).
Minari tells of a Korean family who moved to Arkansas and started farming in the 1980s. This drama genre film begins with the story of Jacob (Steve Yeun) and Monica Yi (Han Ye-ri).

The two of them are a married couple from Korea who later moved to the United States looking for their fortune. In the 1980s, they moved to rural Arkansas to become self-employed after a decade of sorting chicks in California.
Together with their two children, they are trying to build a better family economy by farming. In the midst of this adaptation effort, intrigue and family dynamics began to occur.

Soon-ja (Yoon Yeo-jeong) ‘s grandmother then comes from South Korea to help raise Jacob and Monica’s children. Soon-ja’s presence isn’t just for nurturing, but it changes the atmosphere for the family.
Minari is the fourth feature film by Lee Isaac Chung. The film is inspired by the story of director Lee Isaac Chung himself as a Korean-American descendant.

Although not a direct adaptation, Minari is even considered an autobiographical film showing the struggles of first-generation immigrants. The story comes from a trip her grandmother moved to America and started growing mineral parsley (water parsley).
